It was an honour to have a chance taking part in the 2021 Deutsch-Koreanisches Forum. I am Jieun Lee, a graduate student in Graduate School of International Studies at Seoul National University. I was in Group 5. My group was focusing on ESG, one of the hottest topics in business world. We worked on the policy report under the title: Greener, Fairer, Stronger? Exploring incentives and government regulations in Germany and Korea to encourage start-ups and small-medium-sized businesses to implement ESG policies.
Before the official forum started, the Korean forum organization gave participants chances to reach out to the team members earlier. My group had two times of video meetings to share ideas for the final topic that what should we have focused on under the topic of ESG. As ESG is a broad issue, we faced difficulties to find a direction for the report. After having discussions, we chose to stay on “Environment”. Furthermore, we tried to narrow down the topic by limiting incentives to start-ups and small-medium sized businesses.
We divided work loads to compare incentives that the Korean government and the German government offer to companies which try to implement ESG business operation. With the brief introduction to ESG concepts, our report includes small-medium-sized business markets, Korean ESG plans towards them, German ESG markets for the same sized companies and their incentives. With comparative methodology, we tried to analyze which strategies or policies that Korea or Germany can bring insights to each country’s situation.
After having preparation and discussions, we finally met our German team partners. They conducted a thorough research about the German market so that we can swiftly combine all information into our policy paper. Our group was able to finish the final report faster than other teams because we prepared most of information so that we only needed to neatly organize the paper direction and write conclusion.
The topic was not easy and online meetings were tough. However, all of us including myself gained quite valuable lessons with the forum experience. To begin with, in an academic wise, participating in the forum was a great chance to get to know about new topics deeper. I have heard about “ESG” but with profound research and discussions with my teammates, I have studied more thoroughly and broadly to gain knowledge for writing a policy report. Moreover, it even gave me an insight to decide which thesis topic I could work on.
In social wise, although it could have been better if we could have more time to communicate with teammates and other participants, the forum was a nice chance to know new friends from not only from Korea but from Germany. Again, it was a great opportunity to know good new friends and see how to cooperate German students. We visited the residency of German ambassador in Korea, which was a unique experience for us as well.
The highlight of the forum was attending the senior forum with juniors’ ideas and giving a presentation. I was there as the representative of Group 5. Presenting our outcomes in front of numerous high-positioned people was not easy but with their great feedback, I could learn broader perspectives.
Overall, I appreciated that the forum was well-organized and prepared thoroughly. I even am considering about joining the next forum in this year. Due to the Covid-19 situation, many activities were limited but still it was a great experience both academically and socially.
2021년 한독주니어 포럼에 참가했던 서울대학교 국제대학원 이지은입니다. 저는ESG에 관련하여 “Greener, Fairer, Stronger? Exploring incentives and government regulations in Germany and Korea to encourage start-ups and small-medium-sized businesses to implement ESG policies” 의 주제로 정책보고서를 제출했던 그룹5에 속해 있었습니다.
저희 5조는 공식적인 포럼이 시작되기전에 두 차례 사전회의시간을 가졌습니다. ESG 자체가 굉장히 넓기때문에 정책보고서를 어떤 방향으로 잡아야하는지 조금 더 명확하고 자세한주제설정부터 필요했습니다. 저희는 먼저 ESG중 가장 많은 정보를 얻을 수 있고, 현실적인 정책들이 발표되는 “E” (환경)에 집중하기로 했습니다. 그리고 이를 좀 더 구체적이고 자세하게 다루기 위해 스타트업 및 중견기업에 대한한국 및 독일정부의 ESG 정책을 비교하는 보고서를 작성하는 목표를 세웠습니다.
저희는 먼저 ESG에 대한 개념설명으로 주제에 대한 보고서를 작성했습니다. 그 후에는 한국의 스타트업, 중견기업시장과 이에 대한 한국정부의 ESG 인센티브 등의 정책 그리고 독일의 같은시장과 독일정부의 정책을 비교하는 레포트를 작성했습니다. 비교방법론을 통해 정책을 비교분석하여 각 국가가 어쩌면 당국에 유용하게 사용될 수 있는 정책발의가 가능한 최종보고서를 제출했습니다. 저희팀은 다른팀들에 비해 최종보고서를 비교적 빠르게 완성할 수 있었습니다. 이는 사전회의 및 조사, 그리고 독일팀원들과의 분업과 협력을 통한 결과물이었다고 생각합니다.
ESG 주제 자체가 솔직히 쉽지만은 않았습니다. 그러나 저를 포함한 저희 팀원 모두는 이번 포럼 주제를 다루면서 좀 더 다가오는 미래 지향적 정책에 대해 생각해볼 수 있었던 값진 경험이었습니다. 학술적인면에서 이번 포럼을 참가하면서 최근 많은 기업들이 관심을 기울이고, 기업들의 목표로 설정되고 있는 “ESG”에 대해 좀 더 공부해보고 알게된 계기가 되었습니다. 관련된 논문과 기사, 정책 사안등을 한국 및 독일 현황에 대해 찾아보며 주제에 대해 공유하면서 자연스레 습득된 지식은 최종 보고서를 작성하는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 팀원들과 함께 조사하고 서로 알려주면서 지식의 폭을 확장하는 기회도 되었습니다. 더 나아가 저는 이제 앞으로 작성해야 할 논문 주제를 확정하는 데 있어서 포럼 준비를 위한 사전 조사 및 ESG에 대한 공부가 큰 도움이 되었습니다.
사회적인 면으로는 비록 포럼 기간동안 할 일이 많아서 그리고 코로나 상황때문에 주어진 시간이 짧았지만 새로운 좋은 친구들을 만나고 협력하는 뜻 깊은 시간이었습니다. 같이 토의하고, 밥을 먹고,주한독일대사관저를 방문하면서 잊지 못할 추억을 만들었습니다. 시간이 좀 더 길었거나 같이 공유할 수 있는 활동들이 더 많았으면 훨씬 재미있었을 것 같습니다.
개인적으로 이번 포럼에 참가하면서 가장 인상깊었던 순간은 시니어 포럼에서 저희 조 대표로 발표를 했던 순간입니다. 한국과 독일을 연결하고 계시는 다양한 전문가 및 고위 관직에 계신 분들 앞에서 저희의 정책 보고서를 짧게 보고하면서 더욱 큰 소속감과 책임감을 느꼈습니다. 뿐만아니라 시니어 포럼 참가자들께서 주신 피드백을 들으며 좀 더 포럼 주제들에 대해 넓은 시각과 현실적인 판단 기준을 갖게 된 것 같아 정말 뜻 깊은 경험이었습니다.
끝으로 이번 2021년 한독주니어포럼에 참가하게 되어 정말 유익하고 즐거웠습니다. 비록 팬더믹 상황으로 많은 것들에 제약이 있었던 점은 아쉽지만 2022년 한독주니어포럼에도 또 참여해서 다른 주제를 공부하고 토의하고 싶을 만큼 학술적인 면에서 사회적인 면에서 뿌듯하고 소중한 시간이었습니다.
